The Origin of an Old Fashioned

By the 1880s, American bars were using this name for a whiskey drink made the older way: spirit, sugar, bitters, and ice. Newer cocktails were adding liqueurs and other modifiers, so asking for a cocktail the old-fashioned way meant going back to that simple mix. An orange peel, twisted over the glass, is the usual finish.
